Bringing together some of the cream of Zimbabwean performers including songstresses Chiwoniso Maraire and Busi Ncube, mBira maestro Adam Chisvo, Wil Hillman on drums, guitarist Roger Mbambo, bassist Peter “Mashasha” Mujuru, keyboardist Bengt Post, vocalist Charles Summerfield, and contribution from Brighton based Gary Redding; they have collaborated to produce an album of songs entitled “Hupenyu Kumusha/Impilo Ekhaya/Life at Home”. With the album taking shape since the beginning of 2005, with regular rehearsals at the affable Jules Parsons home in Umwinsidale, Harare, recording at MFD Studio Harare and mastering at Forest Studios, Johannesburg, the finished product offers something to suit most tastes for those wanting a real taste of Zimbabwean music, or simply missing home. From the opening track Urombo, a fusion of sound bringing in lyrics of a popular Shona folksong sung by Chiwoniso, to Busi Ncubes rendition of Abadala, and Adam Chisvo’s soulful voice in Kumusha – the 11 track album features lyrics in Shona, Ndebele, English and Hebrew and covers a host of styles and flavors. The messages are of Africa and African issues – respect for elders, Aids awareness, the pain of families living apart, homelessness and spiritual matters are some of the issues covered. From mbira fusion, to Afropop and Zimjazz; the music creates an intricate fusion of contemporary and traditional rhythms.
